With relatively quiet off-seasons in recent years, the St. Louis Cardinals could soon make a big splash in 2009.
The Redbirds are reportedly offering outfielder Matt Holliday an eight-year deal in the $128-million dollar range.
Depending on how you look at this, this deal makes a lot of sense or maybe not so much.
Personally, I like Holliday and I think he would fit right in with his strong work ethic and potent bat to give Albert Pujols some extra protection.
On the flip side, this kind of money is big time. And with Pulols getting ready to wrap up the seven-year $100-million dollar deal he signed after the 2007 season a huge deal will soon be coming his way. The bottom line, if the Cardinals do reach a deal with Holliday they must dig even deeper to sign Albert. And that is a lot of money invested into the middle of your line up.
One way or the other, look for something to happen very soon.
